35 Alexandra 'AM' Davila

Lesson Summary

Having loved reading and writing from an early age, encouraged by one teacher in particular, Alexandra Davila, a writer from New York State and published as AM Davila, has a very supportive husband who not only designs her book covers but also bought her a notebook which started her writing journey, finding her initial inspiration being stuck in traffic on a rainy day.

With her focus on post-apocalyptic and dystopian fiction for YA and adult audiences, Alexandra talks about her experience with self-publishing her books and the challenges encountered in marketing them. Alexandra's book cover earrings are a great talking point!

When it comes to editing, Alexandra and Morgen agreed that one of the advantages of self-publishing is the ability to make changes easily should they be needed.

While finding joy in writing regularly, Alexandra admits to juggling writing with a busy life as a teacher and parent, and carves out time to work on her books, including jotting down ideas during her commute. Although she wrote her first draft by hand, the use of Google Docs for writing provides flexibility to work from various locations.

Although she has a love of history, Alexandra explained that writing that genre would be a very different process as the research would be so intensive. Once her current series is 'finished' with book four, potentially a multi-character anthology, she may move to dystopian, despite also being research heavy.

Alexandra mentions receiving feedback from readers through her newsletters. Although having a presence on various social media platforms is important, Alexandra and Morgen agreed that newsletters are a great way of contacting readers directly.

A M Davila writes post-apocalyptic and dystopian fiction for both a YA and adult audience.

When not writing, she teaches Social Studies to high school students in New York.

The worlds she creates are at once both fantastical and eerily plausible.

Her characters may seem familiar because, as a teacher and observer of humanity, Alex creates characters based on life. Each could be someone you know.

Alex resides with her husband, two daughters, and lap dog in the Hudson Valley and enjoys traveling and enjoying the outdoors when she can.
